View Full Version : Sump for my existing SW tank.

I have a 54 gallon corner tank that is FOWLR. I currently have a crushed coral and shell substrait and was looking into using live sand. Problem is this tank has been established for over 2 years and in posing the question of changing out the current substrait with LS the answers I got made me conclude that this would not be a good thing. It was mentioned to me to maybe get a refugium (sp?) and put the LS in there, but in taking measurements I only think the 12" one might fit, but I don't think that would give me much benifit from LS. I could use a larger one if I made a custom cover. For a corner tank, I don't think so. :)

Anyway to get to my question. Would it be possible to put say a 10g sump under my tank and put the LS in there? If so what would I need to get the water into the sump. I know you need a pump to get it back into the tank, every reef tank I have personally seen have the plumbing through the bottom of the tank. Is there something that might work in my situation?
Thanks for your input.

I guess the question is, what are you trying to gain by switching to live sand? I have live sand and I was surprized at how fast it has helped to get the tank established but you already have something that is established. I'm just a beginner but I'd gladly trade a 2 yr established setup for my sissy 30gallon starter tank!! Good Luck!!

I should mention that in my above post I was actually asking the question that I think you are asking, what good will come from switching over to LS? I need to learn this stuff myself!!! Since I started with LS, I just hope I did things the right way, if there is such a thing!

Hey Aquaman,
There are two reasons I want to switch to Live Sand. First and foremost is that no matter what I do, I can't seem to get my Nitrates down below 30ppm and from what I have read LS would greatly benifit me if I used it in conjunction with a plenum to help with denitrification. Second as a breeding place for lack a better description for copepods to help feed my Scooter Blenny. I should mention that I am planning on putting a light on this tank also. I would assume that what I have in mind would require a light. If anybody has any ideas on that, it would be helpfull.
Thanks

Here's another question, Has anyone tried or is there some sort of artificial substance to remove or reduce the Nitrates?
