I want to upgrade from my 30 gal to a 55 gal(at least) but I have no idea what kind of filtration is the best. Right now I am thinking on a wet/dry with a skimmer....is this the best option? Also, can someone explain what exactly an overflow is used for, and what other equipment I should need? Obviously, I am just beginning, and any feedback would be greatly appreciated! The tank would be mainly FOWLR, but I would like some anemones, not sure about coral down the road, but it would definately be down the road. Thanks!!

Hey
To detrmine the best filtration i would like to know what you plan for the tank, as far i see you want anemones, but for a FO i would say go with a skimmer and a refugium.

Overflow I something you place on the back of your tank that drains water to a sump or something like that.

To also start, powerheads and heaters would also be needed. Whats in the 30 gallon now?

my 30 gal was just a starter tank, once i get the new one, it is going to be a qt, right now I simply have a biowheel.....its FOWLR(but not alot of LR). I was looking at a wet/dry with an enclosed skimmer and powerhead all in one...its quite expensive, but its worth it.

I am definately going to have the new tank FOWLR....I already have one clown, which i would like to get some anemones, along with adding another clown or two.

I also want to get another tang, have a yellow, want a regal also. I have seen several that I want, but obviously have no room for now.....got in over my head with the tang I already have with the size of tank.

I am actually considering a 90 gal, after doing my research, i think for the price difference, it is a better value.

Any other help or suggestions would be great!!!! THANKS!!

Hey
Remember, when starting out, larger is better! Get as big as tank as you can afford and have room for.l The all in one wetdry is not worth it in my thoughts. lets say you do go for 90, I would suggest you get another 30 gallon tank to go underneth in the stand, and then from there you can place a GOOD skimmer and some base rock as well. You will need to get an overflow or drill the new tank, along with 2 pumps, one for the skimmer and one toi pump water back up to the main tank.

Along with this i strongly reccomend a CPR hang on the back refugium whewre you can house calurpa. This is very easy to set-up as well when the time comes to.

The poiwerheads are meant to be in the tank for added flow in the tank, not the sump. Also with the sump you can place heaters in there to take away the unatral view of them.

I suggest you check out some of the sponsors sites for these products, many of them give you discounts like captivereefs.
