Hi all

You all know the story....you put a peppermint shrimp in your tank to control aptaisa. Once the main course is gone, he goes looking with his hungry, beady little eyes for dessert.....namley your zoo's, polyps, and shrooms. Or maybe he skips the main course and goes straight to dessert. Either way, the little monster has got to go! Now for those of you who have a tank full of LR and have ever tried to catch one of these critters by hand, you know that short of removing all the rock piece by piece, it is just short of impossible. Well, here is an easy to make, very effective shrimp trap.

Get a 1 liter plastic bottle of Coke, the hourglass shaped one. After the bottle is empty ( I recommend rum to help empty it :-D ) rinse it out well and remove the label. Then use a utility knife to cut the top off the bottle, about 3/4 of the way up, or about 1/2 inch above where the bottle is at its widest before it begins to narrow into the hourglass shape. Poke a few small holes in the lower part of the bottle. Then put a cube of frozen food in the lower part, and insert the top part inverted into the lower part so that the opening you drink out of is facing the bottom of the bottle. Put this in your tank and wait. (usually overnight) It works like a lobster trap, he'll go in after the food, but he won't be able to get back out. this simple, cheap trap has always worked for me. It will also work with those nasty little hairy hitchiker crabs that came on your LR you are not too sure if you want in your tank. I have even used it to catch damsels....they can get back out, so it requires your atttendance to be successful catching damsels.

Excellent idea Mike. Simple to make, and the materials serve more than one function....

Just can't remember where I left my coke bottle. I thought it was next to the Bacardi bottle, but the headache is clouding my memory.... :)

Played that game a few times (removing all my rock that is). I will have to remember your budget trap for the next round. Speaking of rounds, I liked your suggestion for emtying the 1 liter Coke bottle. In fact I think I will work on makeing one right now, just for that  !

Does the Rum addative work on the 2 liter bottle of coke also... if so great.. Will make emptying it a party... I know you all can see it now.... Party at my house I need to catch a shrimp... And in the morning you dont find the coke bottle in the tank but the Rum bottle. Oh ya.

yeah the rum works fine on all sizes of coke bottles.... :D

But for the trap itself, you'll want to use the 1 liter bottle because of its hourglass shape...

lol. This trap really does work. I've used one to catch everything in my tank that moves...at least twice!

I've seen this done before, it's a nice easy setup. I did not have that problem though. My PP shrimp is MIA, well actually all three of my PP shrimps are MIA. I'm pretty positive that my Lion fish has had a shrimp cocktail or three. :-)
