im a peace corps volunteer teaching a marine science class for high school students. I would like to be able to set up some sort of simple marine aquarium, both for student observation and to keep specimens longer. We would be collecting organisms straight out of the ocean close by. Can anyone offer any advice on building something for this purpose? it need not look pretty, just keep fish and invertebrates alive... if i can pump water directly from the ocean do i need to filter/treat it? are there any online resources i could be directed to on how to build the pieces necessary? most online sites i have found are fairly complicated... Thanks!

you can try and contact the louisiana universities marine consortium (LUMCON), and see how they set up their tanks. i know they use ocean water to refill their tanks.

Also, there is an article in our reference section on setting up a Nano Reef (http://www.coralforum.com/reference25.html) tank.

As for using Natural Sea Water, there are a couple of things to consider. First, you need to find a place to get water that you are certain does not have any polutants in it. And there is the possibility of getting parasites in the water.
