Just a quick question - can I use my Eheim canister filter as a return from my sump (have the inlet in sump and outlet into main tank)?

im not the degining thought here, but it the canister can handel pumping water up form unferneath the tank when its plumbed inline, why not just have the inlet work like a pump?. keep in mind though to find a way to keep the tube underwater at all times

Can you yes. Should you, NO.

OH BUT MAC, WHY?

Why you say:

1. Ehiems are not pressure rated pumps. Even a little head (not to mention the pressure of feeding that water through that media) will dramatically reduce flow.

2. For most reef setups that little water movement does not lend to enough DOS export.

3. That canister (if full of media) is flat out a Nitrate Factory.

4. What happens when your overflow clogs and that pump just keep on a pumpin? until you overflow your tank onto your floor?

Just a few things to think over... give me 15 minutes and maybe I can think of some more if you?re still not convinced.

Best,
