Okay, having african cichlids, I am aware that this is an expensive hobby. So, very soon I will be receiving a settlement for a bad accident that I was in. It isn't a lot,(it isn't enough, but we are still talking a couple of thousand.)and I THINK it will be enough to start me off! Sick, isn't it? I'm looking to a cash settlement of a couple of thousand just to offset the start up costs of a tank! We really DO need AA for this hobby! (repeat after me: I am powerless over fish, and my life has become unmanageable...)

  good im not the only one. i was really starting to feel pretty bad becuase i spent so much and spent alot of it on things i dont even need
i get a good price and i am in my 2 tanks for 7,000
It's all about knowing where to buy your "stuff" Smart shoppers who take time find best deals I have found. If it's a big purchase such as 100lbs rock, then i need to find the best deal! I hope here on CF i can hope to find spiceals and discounts as some of the sponsors have given :)
i honestly think i have blown more money now that i wholesale. i order 4 times as much stuff, and things i dont really need. like this weekend, i will be in l.a. i dont really need anything but will end up blowing 2-300 on fish, corals, and cleaners. i usually blow 200-300 a month

$2000. Haha, tha's small time friend. I am compulsive about hunting out deals and my newest tank alone still will come out to around $5000 alone. Lets not mention other tanks and upkeep. Money is for people who want to eat, suckers... now how much did you want for those frags again.

hmmm. Mine was 4,000 to get it started  175 bow front. That doesnt include the 14 fish ive purchased and the 15 corals ive purchased along with all the clean up crew including cleaner shrimp. It gets very expensive, but well worth it :o

Way Way over 15,000+ for me. :)
I own a store dudes, so ya know hehe.
The inventory alone is over 10,000.
Not including the tanks, nor the stock for them, nor liverock for the initial startup.

I dont remeber, but i would say $1800. the majority of that is fish and sand. the setup was cheap only 700 (tank, filter, skimmer, light). But it has gotten out of hand so my 90 salt is coming down and it will be fresh. I'm putting a 40 in my room that will be salt. :hmm2:

Cich,
I'm with you. If you don't actually KNOW how much you have spent altogether, then you don't have to account for each dollar! My hubby seems to work under this same philosophy: I'm "way up" at poker, I'm "about even", I'm only down a "few bucks." It's all just shades of grey!

Wow- you guys are making me feel alot better about my tank expenditures I totaled about $1000 in setting up and (partailly) stocking my 16G, which I thought was a bit much- but now I'm thinking maybe it's just average!!
hummmm, I am probably someheres around 8500.00 at this point although I havent added things up the last 4 months. Thats for a 65, 75 and 135 gallon tanks

I have never kept track, because it has never been about the money. Although, when I needed to spend $100 on a qt tank setup I thought the wife was going to have a fit! If I kept up with the cost I think it would take the enjoyment out of it for me.....kinda like my woodshop. I probably have over 30G in tools and equipment and lumber, but if I ever stopped and counted it up I would probably feel bad about sitting on the couch watching a ball game Saturday afternoon instead of being out in the shop!!!

Well... +-8yrs., 2 tanks (small) $8,600 supplies and maintenance.
Equipment and setups over those 8yrs. +- $1500
Not to talk about live stock, electricity.... Jeez that could have been a nice vacation, but I'm pretty sure you'll understand I don't think about it I just do as my tanks dictate :D

but the tank help eliminte need for vacation. its a private resort on theocean with fine sand and clear water.* realizes he sound like a travel agent* but it you must admit, the tranquility of the tank greatly increases ime beween needed vacations.

Not sure how much my tank is going to cost me in the end, but just talked the wife in coughing up 3k for our first tank setup. Even convinced her that was for tank and supplies only. In 2-3 months she will have to start coughing up for fish and coral for the tank.

As far as $$$$$ I knew it was going to cost. So far after 3 months on my 55gal ref everything included from live sand to scrubbies my total cost is only $1,628.00 That don't include the R/O system I put in my house so if you want add another $175.00 But I figure that since I put a pressurized unit in under the sink it is good drinking water so that don't count (Thats what I told my wife)
