I woulnd't put it in the main tank bacause the water flow is too much and will stir it up. The refugium is supposed to have a much slower flow rate. I looked at using this in my refugium and ended up choosing CaribSea Araga-Mud (http://www.marinedepot.com/md_viewItem.asp?idproduct=CS0933) based on several comments on another forum. One thing I was worried about is the possibility that Miracle mud might cause the water to be brown for a while. The Araga Mud seemed to be a much better choice for me since it is calcium based and would help keep the calcium level up in the tank.

i totally agree, mirical mud is not inteded for the main tank enviorment, if you want realy fine sand, kent makes a product similar to mirical mud but it is calicum based and much better in my opinion

Miracle Mud is a wonder in my opinion. They have ran out of the lighter colored version I do believe, because I keep getting black sediment now...its weird ;) Good stuff though. Carib-Sea Miracle Mud.

Kent's product, doesn't seem to disperse nutrients as long as the MM does...it lasts for a long time...

I use it in my refugium but I don't think I'd want to run it in my main tank.
they even suggest, running aragonite over the top of it.

If you mix the Miracle Mud with a courser grained sand, like aragonite, then the mud would settle to the bottom, and the aragonite ( which should stay in place under normal conditions ) will remain at or near the surface.

I have not used the stuff yet, but it does come highly recommended as a sump or refugium substrate... :)

I don't use it in the main tank. I also don't recommend using it, for the reason of it stirring up. You'll end up with a milkshake, unless your only going to have LR and coral and algae's. You could mix it with Southdown then, and it would be a good combination, then you could use it in the main tank. I just use it in my refugium's. One of my older systems, it was a refugium that ran by itself, and it was in there, and I had a few fish in there and LR, and I never really had a problem with the sediment stirring up...do what do you.

I guess it boils down to a personal preference issue.

I think everyone is on agreement that is should not be used as the only subtrate in the main tank. It will need to be mixed with something else to keep in on the bottom. :)

It also appears that from a safety standpoint, there should be no real risk, besides possibly cloudy water. :)

i no longer have the packaging from it, and i dont have the time right now to go to the web site and find out, but im guessing that it is just a blend of some kind of sea silt, and maby some mineral dust. mixed with courser materail
