View Full Version : Can You Check My Sump Plan

I plan to have a hole around 1" drilled just below the top of my tank (maybe 2" down) and from this a pipe going straight down into a tank in my stand (the sump). This will have a pump in to power my DIY skimmer and will have pipes from my wet/dry and the inlet for my Eheim canister. The out pipe from the canister will be the return??
Basically the water empties throught the hole in the top of the main tank. The amount it can empty (to the bottom of the hole) can easily fit in my sump without over-flowing. The inlet to my canister filter (the return) will sit about 2" from the bottom of the sump, so if the hole in the main tank blocks, the sump can only empty to the height of the canister inlet (so the main tank can't flood...
This sound ok, what stupid things am I over looking?

sounds good to me, but youll want to cover your drop to the sump, perhaps witha sponge carefully cut to hang out areound the edges, or with a plastic cage and or screen. youll not want to keep finding your expensive fish in your sump. :eek2:

Thanks a lot for the reply!
Yeah lol I plan to cover the hole with a cage of some sort!
I understand I could put various content into my sump for added filtration etc, but what exactly could I use? I have seen large cubic sponges just sitting in tanks before, is this just to get the bacteria up? If I use carbon (which I want to) Could I put this in a net bag and keep it dangled under the inlet pipe?

Ok that would be great - I'm at work this weekend though! Any chance we could 'chat' next week or give me a brief idea of the problems on this...
I think one problem will be the filter a.k.a sump pump idea. Will have to change that... Can't think of any more problems though :?

Macbeth417, whether you discuss this over AIM or not it would be nice to see your comments and suggestions posted at some point.
