Did you research the corals before making the purchase? Gonioporas are amongst one of the hardest corals to keep and don't fare well in the home aquarium. The case is that their is not enough nutrients in our aquariums to keep them healthy for long term success. In the wild, they are found in dirty lagoons with lots of food for them to feed on. Generally they have only lived longer for a period of a year in peoples aquariums who don't run hevay skimming, dose a lot of phytoplankton, have estesblished aquariums, and not a lot of food eating corals that may take away from them. Same goes for their relatives Avelepora who look very similar. However, these corals have a slightly higher survivial rate then the Goniopora.

As for the Xenia, just make sure you maintain stable water parims. IMO< they always seem to like stronger lighting and a medium water flow. They are filter feeders so sopmetimes people turn their skimmer off at night etc. so it doesn't drain the food source that the xenia uses. It has been known to spread fast so it may need frequent fragging. It's a good idea to place some rubble rocks around it so when it spreads, you can just remove the pieces of rubble rock with it on it and sell them to other aquarists or trade it at the LFS.

Not sure if you have any clown fish, but clowns have been known to use goniporas as a host which also leads to their demise in the aquarium.

i know about the gonoprias and i was thinking, i have a 135 gal that is going to be aggressive/reef/FOWLR. If i got good enough light i.e. MH or PC would it do better than in a reef tank? I htink it would and might try that in the future.

Thanks for all ur help

I would definetely return it for the Brain Coral. Why have something that is bound to die when you can have something that is going to live and grow?

Hey, sorry to jump in late on this thread, but I wanted to weigh in on the Goni. I'm probably one of the few exceptions to the rule (mine's actually growing ... with clowns in it), but for most people they just don't survive. Hard to say why, not enough is truly known about their needs. I won't rehash what's already been said... here's the original discussion we had http://coralforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=123&highlight=

Good luck and I second Zack... be strong! :-)
