I have found a neat trick that seems to work quite well you know the milk jugs the have a popon top take two of those caps and put one on one end and then fill up the tube completly then put the other cap on the openend. Then just stick the tube in the overflow. Than just pop off the caps and wolla you have a siphon.

I have seen an automatic siphone starter on some of the overflow boxes. The way it works is there is a small tube conneted to the siphone at the top of the tube where the air would accumulate. This tube is then connected to ventury inlet of a powerhead. This effectively sucks out the air and starts the siphon. Don't know if you're bold enough to try this modification, but thought I'd mention it.
