What is the recommended photo period 8) for a reef tank? I am using power compacts. I've heard no more that 12 hours a day.

Many people work up to a 12-13 hour photo period depending on what light intesity and period they started with. If this tank started with X wattage of PC to beging with(you didn't list wattage or bulb types?) then just put it on 12 hour timer.
Also what are you keeping? Do you have any reason to reduce photo period, because of excess nutrient problems resulting in agals problems ect? I say anything around 12 hours is fine, but more info on your tank and lighting itself is always helpful to give you an educated response.

I run a 400 watt MH and I have it on 9 hours a day, sps/clams seem to do fine. I know people who do longer time, but as macbeth417 said, alage can become a problem! :hmm2:
