The following information, is provided as is, no more assistance, and it is recommended, you have some basic computer knowledge before attempting to fix any of the things listed below. I hereby am NOT responsible, for any malfunctions, registry errors, crashes, etc... that are a result of this information being posted.

So, after making a scare, from the disclaimer :) How's your day? Mine, not good after seeing about 30 million pop ups. I've been fighting this battle for a good 3 months now. I can finally say I've won, to this date, every case of spyware and adware. Want to know how I did it? Norton Antivirus, is no help here, it doesn't matter if you have the MOST up to date antivirus around. Only in some circumstances will a firewall even help you, only good ones will anyway. Also depending on how it functions, you can't get rid of it, unless you look the program names up in google, or another search engine. Also, if your Internet Explorer, or Netscape, which I haven't used in years might I add (and I don't know if there is even toolbar spams for Netscape), but if you have tool bars popping up...saying, BestSearch, or Yahoo, sometimes you can uninstall these manually via Start>Settings>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs. Sometimes you can't. Although you can get rid of them. There are many spyware remover programs, but none that function like this one. I find that Ad-aware 6.0, is a great program, easy to use...and it fixes and backsup everything. I delete mine, because I frankly don't care about saving spyware somewhere in a folder unused, to build up :) So far, I've had 28 scans, and removed 82 items. On my other PC, I had 4 scans with 125 objects. After this, I use RegistryMechanic as well, if your into "cracking" software, this is where you'll enjoy getting the free programs. I use both, they work great. I've eliminated most of the spyware, except 1 search bar, called Clear Search. (C:\program files\clear search\) It had really been irritating me, I finally went into registry and deleted everything that had to do with that and other popups...I mean Ad-aware is just a program, it has things it misses as well..so I went ahead and deleted a few things out of there, rebooted, loaded IE, there was the bar, I was astonished. I tried to manually delete the directory, can't do it, its Access Denied, since the file is in use. So I went to Google...did a search for Clear Search, pulled up Clear Search Inc, and went to their site, what was really funny, was they had "UN-Installer" right on their website, like you can't miss it in the menu to the left, I laughed thinking about what scam artists they are and how they get into your PC. Well enough ranting...if you need help...although I don't want any PM's concerning this, or emails, or IM's, feel free to post them here and I'll help you the best to my ability.

Cordially,

Jared Waites

Good call. I do quite a bit of network security auditing for a large Telco, and it never ceases to amaze me how light security is in some places and how much spyware is installed on corporate machines. Trojans are another huge problem. Ad-Aware 6 is a great program. HiJackThis works very well to clear things as well.

Paul, I'll be trying HiJackThis, and comparing the results from the two :) Thanks :P

Yeah, that one is a pain. Nothing worse than a little Script-Kiddie with a sub7 trojan. Its like giving a toddler a loaded weapon... they have no idea how it works, which makes it that much more dangerous. For anyone that's infected (or just wants to know), this is a good little article:

I've come to the conclusion, paul, that HiJackThis, is definently not for newbie's. If you think you know what your doing, you don't, when it comes to that program...that is for people that know windows, like they know the back of their hand, literally. You can easily mess up and delete...alot of vital dll's and other things that you potetionally need!

as a blocker so as to not do any possible dammage to your puter you can use pop-up stopper, i have it running and it works great... you can buy it, i have a cracked copy.

as far as adware i have used spybot to remover stuff like gator and other pesky things like that, altho i reformat my main hd every 4 months and keep any important files on one of my other 120 maxtors.

Good idea to reformat, although I hate going through the whole process of loading drivers and stuff, although WinXP is pretty user friendly. Spybot is actually not the program I was thinking of, HiJack this is the one I do not like...I do have a version of AdAware that I can give out...if anyone needs a copy, I have it uploaded...PM me, if your interested.

I have ad-aware 6.0 also, Ive had similiar problems. It works great, but there are more than just adware ads that gets onto computer. You will need a spyware remover as well. I recomend Spybot-search & destroy, you will be amazed to find the other crap that is on your computer also making it run slugish. The best part about both programs is that they are free.

ad-aware 6.0 professional, isn't free. That's the version I was offering ;) Ad-Aware 6.0 also removes spyware, might I add. But used in combination like you said, with Spy-bot, yes...it works quite well.

I agree with the spy-bot and adaware!! spybot will remove a number of things that adaware will not remove. and vise-versa. using the both of them once a month, keeps me pop-up free. auctually i hardly use them anymore.

one time i got really mad at my neighbor. i gave him a floppy disk that i said was swimsuit model pics, heh. what it really was was a device of destruction. i scraped off matchhed powder and glued it inside the floppy disk. when the comp read the disk, FWOOSH up in flames. good thing i told him to use it on his crappy computer. i just payed him 20$ and now we are the best of friends. take note im 13 and i do stuff like this.

not really a virus but something funny and computer destructive.

Both apps are great, and I agree that hijack this is not for newbie's to computing. The biggest problem with adware is the lack of a firewall usage, on the main stream of computer systems these days. For example, Windows 2000 was one of the first OS I had seen ad boxes pop up on (grey windows with ok or close button, usually have an IP address in the advertising message). This problem was part of a paticualr application called messenger (not to be confused with the chat application MSN Messenger), that allowed administrators to message the network when deamed necessary. This application, or service, was allowing potential hackers to use the paticular Port to either advertise, or bring it down by it's knees. This same service is on by default on windows XP systems, however if the Pro version of the OS is used and Firewall is enabled the secuirty breech is solved. The newest version of Windows XP service pack, Service pack 2, includes a better firewall utility, pop-up blocker for Internet explorer and it monitors your virus software and weather it's current or enabled. Virus protection and Adware scanners are all only as good as the latest updates. The newest version of Ad-aware, SE, incorporates the update process every time it's loaded unlike the manual updating in the past versions. Not sure of the current trial version, but www.lavasoftusa.com will tell ya.
