well I have added a small finger leather and some yellow polyps. Ohh and some GSPs. The funny thing is the GSP (Green Star Polyps) are spreading faster in there then they are in my show tank. :o

how long have you had this tank set up?

Condiman

since December 1st of 2003. I do my testing twice a week and change 3 cups of water per week.

what all equipment do you have with it? if any.

Condiman

Only equipment I have in the tank is a small little fountain powerhead, 15 watt heater, and 2 = 9watt PC for lights

that's all i have as well. rio 50 with a splitter and coralife minimight 6 inches from water surface. no heater though. constant 79 F from heat produced from pump. i'm using a computer fan to keep the hot air away from the tank made from light. also, eclipse filter with sponge, biowheel, and no carbon.

are you using anything to aid in the cycle process besides LR and LS? also, how long did it take for you to get your readings that low? oh, and what temp are you keeping it at? and you aren't adding anything to the water like additives or supplements? sorry about all the questions, but this is my second attempt at this nano 3.5 gal. my first try went horribly wrong due to bad advice and unexplainable circumstances.

one week since retry with new LS, water, complete cleanout of filter and pump. one crab (unidentified and dying), green and orange mushrooms (struggling), tube worm with red featers, green and yellow star polyps (dying), sponge (looks dead), and blue and green button polyps (one looks dead and the other struggling). left over inhabitants from first disaster.

I used existing lr from my show tank to aid in the cycle process. I believe it only took about 3 weeks to cycle all the way. I am not adding any supplements because since I cange water once a week I dont have to add any.

Do you have any pics of your setup? Also I would not use a sponge in there because it causes to may problems

Personally I would loose the sponge and biowheel that is probably the problem I have no external filtration on my tank.

Same, I Removed The Bio Wheel From My Fresh Water Tank. Clownman How Come Your Icon Pictur Says Jman?

no filtration at all? can you do that? i mean will the tank work without that?
what do you do about waste that floats around in the water?
without the sponge, crap will always flow around. doesn't it also hold beneficial bacteria? without the sponge, how do you keep the water clean? loose the biowheel? doesn't the biowheel provide bacteria that eliminates ammonia and nitrites. also, doesn't it help in aerating the water? if the tank will work better without that, then i'll remove it, but i don't understand how that's possible. i read everywhere that filtration is one of the most important things to have. your tank is doing fine without a filter?
i'm getting the beginning of red slime. on my LR and LS. i use my filter to hold phosphate eliminator stuff, since red slime feeds off of it, i'm trying to eliminate every trace of it from the tank. my readings for phosphate reads almost 0. i'm surprised that some red slime can live on such short supply of phosphate. without the filter, where will i put it?

this is some very interesting info. thnx for all the input.

That is what the LR is for it dose all of the filtration for the tank here is the link to the site that got me started on doin a one gallon http://www.angelfire.com/ma3/jonsreef/1gal/.

 that was so cool. thnx. so i'm guessing fish are out of the question. i was thinking of having a total of three hermits, two astrea snails, a cleaner shrimp, a percula goby, and one other small fish. spread out over time of course. will i need the filter then?

u say u have 2 9 watt lights right? thats 18 watts per gallon. why go for low light when u can get any coral you want? if your tank is big enough, you could get a ultra maxima clam or something.

I go by intesensity of the lighting not the watts per gallon rule also colts and discos are more hardy in such a small enviroment.
