well i finaly hooked up my 400 watt mh last night, and well i thought it was working out good, untill the glass under it exploded,
i have gone and bought "heat resistent" glass not but when it happend the glass it was stiiting on was red.
so a word of advice, make sure your mh are properly postiond from the glass or you will have a problem

Be careful now when digging in your tank, there have got to be some shards and little pieces hidden by reflection and waters depth perception

don't want a tank full of blood now just because you cut yourself on glass

I second that on the glass shards in the tank. They can be very hard to see in the water. I had a similar thing happed when I first set up my current tank. I had it set up and wanted to put the LR in that I had been cycling in a separate tub, but I felt that the water temp was too low in the tank. I decided to try to help heat the water by placing a Halogen spot light above the tank. I know, I know, what was I thinking!? Anyway, the glass on top of the tank broke about 30 minutes after I set up the light.
So, how far above the glass was your MH light?

less than an inch

You have raised the MH up now I hope. I've always heard that 8 inches in the minimum distance above the water that a MH light should be placed.
