I modified an old SeaClone 150 and the difference was very noticable.
But What About The Sponge?

I'd say leave it off.

oki, i dont have a tank up yet, but i seem to think that the sponge would be bad if the skimmer is in a sump. the only thing gunna get sucked up in there is water, it seems to me teh only time the sponge would do any good is in the actual display tank, where there are moveing thing, sorry if my logic is off, just tryin to help

I am interested in an update. Did removing the sponge, or any other changes you may have made make any difference? If so, what?
Paul,
I almost fell off my chair laughing, when you said seaclones can always use some help. I ran a seaclone 100 on my first reef tank, and returned it in 3 weeks. Since then, I have come to see that most skimmers out there need a bit of fine tuning to get your money's worth out of them. Some just need a bit more than others. :)

You're right most do need tweaking or, if nothing else, they need periodic overhaul. There are very few skimmers on the market that can run for extended periods of time without maintenance. For some reason there seems to be a misperception that a skimmer should be maintenance-free.

They are maint. free, just ask the people who run them till they are so full of goop that the bubbles can't even reach the collection cup. Atleast this is what some of my fellow employees seem to think.
I drain and clean my 3 skimmer cups ( 2 seperate aquariums), twice a week or so. Combined total of 150 gallons of saltwater. How often do you clean and drain yours. And how many gallons of water are they cleaning?
I have a place for the waiste to come out through, very nice, but i like to clean it 2-3 times a week.

I have mine drilled with a small drain hose as well that feeds into an old 2 liter bottle. I still check it everyday and clean the cup (especially the inside stem) about 3 times a week.

Paul,
How far away from Hernando County are you? I will be down your way in April, and would like to visit some LFS that you consider to be of higher quality. Plus a little wet suit diving?

:-) I have no idea where that is. What city are you visiting? I live in Palm Beach County (no voting jokes, please). Boca Raton is about half way between West Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale (and about an hour north of Miami). Let me know where you'll be exactly and I'll let you know what LFS's I know of in the area. One of the blessings is that there are so many down here. I haven't even been to all of them in this area yet!
I Took The Sponge Off And It Made No Difference. TYhey Are Just Not Good Skimmers. I Bought A Cpr Bak Pak 2r And Its Working Great

Like I said, you have to do the modifications or they don't work right.

Keep that sponge off... it's more of a hassle than it is worth. You want to have maximum flow through that thing, and the sponge just slows that down.
I have a 100 and a 150. The 100 takes a long time to tune. The 150 works great.
Bear in mind that some of the older Sea Clones do not have removable inner tubes... no matter how "carefully" you try to remove the inner tube, it wont come. Just an FYI.
Thanks,
Brian

Are you serious, removed again!
I think it is very very important that people who are newer to this hobby know that seaclones are not good products and that their reefs not suffer as a result of them choosing to own one. I think it is our job to inform them of this.
Sorry, equipment is my thing and that is just not good equipment.

Hi all
I modified my seaclone a few months after I got it, and it works a lot better with the mods. I didn't do the airstone, but I replaced the cheesy air mixture valve with a nice needle valve, and cut the internal tube down to 2 1/2"...that made a big difference. I also drilled a few more vent holes in the cup lid, and cut about 1/2" off the riser tube in the cup, then polished the rough edges. This helped improve the skimate ending up in the cup rather than sliding back down the riser. I also added a rubber gasket between the collection cup and the skimmer for a better seal. The skimmer works ok with regular maintenance, but had I known it would take that much work, I think I would have saved a bit more and bought a better skimmer....

Maybe I'm just a newb but my seaclone works fine. I get lots of air bubbles and have to clean the dispenser cup every 2-3 days. On another note, since I have just converted to a reef tank and started dosing calcium, iodine, strontium..My skimmer now needs to be emptied almost everyday. I do not have any fish in the tank at this time ( 3 clowns in quarantine). Should I cut back on the skimming? I am just removing all of the things I want in the tank?

 How do you know if your seaclone is not working properly? I have the same one and it seems to do fine. I empty the cup about every2-3 days and since converting to a reef tank and dosing am emptying the cup every day. What are the signs to look for in a good skimmer?
