It depends on how big of a challenge you're looking for. The bigger the tank is the more forgiving it is. Now the difference between a 3 and a 5 gallon is minimal... if you screw up with a tank of either of those volumes you're in big trouble fast. The only decision criteria that I would use is space for livestock. What do you plan on keeping in the tank? How much lighting will you have?

I say the 3 long will work just get like a little PC light but u need to top off water regualry to keep salt levels in check!

FYI you can get 10 gallon tanks for like $10 bucks that would be great for this!

Also The 5 Gallon Hex Has 15 Watt Lighting. Thats 3 Watts Pergallon Which Is Pretty Good

listen, dont go with the three gallon for the reason, that it is just too small.
the 5 gallon has incandestnt light, and has to small a with to be retrofited, so i would go with neather. i woudl go with a system six. if possible, and if not i would go to walmart(lol funny as it sounds) and get a regency 5. the parts are actually made by marineland so they are the same thing. but then you can retrofit the lighting and create a proper nano reef. it you want a fish, then i would have to say no, but if you must, go with a catilina or citron goby.

good luck,
